For decades an international icon in music and film production, Galaxy Studios is now opening a new chapter. A group of successful entrepreneurs from the Kempen region has acquired the entire studio complex, including all its advanced technical equipment, from the hands of the curators. This ensures the vision of founders Wilfried and Guy Van Baelen is preserved, and their life’s work receives a powerful restart.
The new team shares a clear vision: combining entrepreneurship with a deep passion for top-quality image and sound, and committing firmly to a sustainable future for Galaxy Studios. They surround themselves with the right people, industry experts who know the music and film world inside out.
Day-to-day management of Galaxy Studios will be in the hands of Wim Buyens, a Belgian top entrepreneur with over twenty years of experience in media and entertainment technology. His most recent achievement is the international expansion of the Belgian-rooted high-end loudspeaker brand Procella Audio, which under his vision has become a benchmark for both cinemas and high-end home theaters. Before that, Buyens led the entertainment activities of Belgian visualization company Barco and its joint venture Cinionic for nearly two decades; as CEO, he lifted the cinema division to a global market share of 70%.
Previously, he held senior executive positions at the renowned audio firm Brüel & Kjær, built a strong network in Hollywood as Chairman of the Advanced Imaging Society, and maintains strategic relationships from China to Los Angeles. Under his leadership, several technology companies scaled from a few million to €100–300 million in revenue, growth crowned with multiple Lumière Awards.
Buyens’ credo “built to last” emphasizes his focus on sustainable growth and his belief that audio, accounting for 60% of nearly every audiovisual experience, is the core of emotion, a vision that perfectly aligns with Galaxy Studios’ immersive DNA.
He is supported in this mission by brothers Wilfried and Guy Van Baelen, who will continue to contribute their technical expertise, international reputation, and extensive network of artists, producers, and managers to help Galaxy shine once more on the world stage.
Thanks to its unique acoustic design and the tireless craftsmanship of its technical team, the creative engine of Galaxy Studios has never stopped running. Recording, mixing, and mastering have continued uninterrupted, allowing artists, filmmakers, and now also game developers to seamlessly access a studio infrastructure in top condition today.
The new owners and management have strong faith in the unique qualities of Galaxy Studios, which is internationally acclaimed for having the quietest and most acoustically advanced recording studios in the world. Alongside local artists such as Hooverphonic, Clouseau, dEUS, Bart Peeters, Tura, Natalia, Dana Winner, and Helmut Lotti, major international names such as Rammstein, Kendrick Lamar, James Last, Mary J. Blige, and Lauryn Hill have also found their way to Mol. Productions from Galaxy Studios have not only won multiple Grammy Awards but also received numerous nominations, including an Oscar nomination.
In the film world, Galaxy Studios has also built a strong reputation: in 2011, the very first film ever with native 3D sound was completed here, commissioned by none other than George Lucas, the world-famous director of Star Wars. This used the revolutionary Auro-3D® format, developed at Galaxy Studios.
Auro-3D is the “Immersive Audio” format created at Galaxy Studios. You can experience it in premium cinemas, high-end home theaters, and luxury cars, it forms the 3D sound foundation of Porsche’s Burmester® 3D High-End Surround systems. The format adds a true height layer to traditional surround sound and is recognized worldwide as a top standard for lifelike audio.
Soon, the Auro-3D listening experience will become even more accessible at home through a new streaming app from co-founder Wilfried Van Baelen. The “AuroMasters Music App,” designed for standard smartphones and existing Auro-3D systems, will be launched later this summer at Galaxy Studios.
Proud of 40 years of Belgian craftsmanship, the legendary complex is now being given a facelift for the future. The control and live rooms are being refreshed, the residential studio accommodations are being transformed into stylish creative retreats, and there are plans for a full-fledged hotel, the beating heart of what will soon be called “Galaxy World.” Here, the music, film, and gaming content of tomorrow will be created, while visitors can stroll through the halls where decades of audiovisual history come to life, now also open to the public.
A unique experience that connects the best of our technological heritage with the unlimited possibilities of tomorrow, proudly made in Belgium.
